Senior Managers

Jayant Kumar
Jayant KumarVice President, Technology Management
Jay has held various positions with TEC Edmonton since it was known as the Industry Liaison Office, a precursor to TEC Edmonton, in 1998. As the Vice President of Technology Management, Jay heads up the Technology Transfer office, supervises the provision of intellectual property services to inventors and entrepreneurs in the region, and helps create new spinoff companies from University of Alberta inventions. Jay began his career as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Delhi University in India, where he pursued research as a Senior Research Fellow of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. He is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), and the Licensing Executives Society (LES). Jay holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science in Physics, as well as an MBA with a specialization in Technology Commercialization. Jay is an active volunteer, organizing classical music concerts from India in Edmonton.
Darrell Petras
Darrell PetrasAssociate Director, Technology Management (Natural Sciences and Engineering)
As the Associate Director of Technology Management (Natural Science and Engineering), Darrell supervises and leads team activities while managing intellectual property matters of strategic importance to the University of Alberta researchers and non-university clients to secure intellectual property rights and transfer the rights for commercialization. As an Entrepreneur in Residence, Darrell also coaches and mentors startup and technology-based clients as they pursue the commercialization of new technology. Before joining TEC, Darrell was a joint operator and owner of a diversified and award-winning farming operation. He also had a consulting practice working in agriculture, green energy, and IT. He belongs to the Alberta Institute of Agrologists, the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), and the Licensing Executives Society. Darrell holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (with distinction). In his spare time, Darrell enjoys camping with his wife and children, horseback riding and motocross, as well as owning two businesses.
Joanna Preston
Joanna PrestonAssociate Director, Technology Management (Health Sciences)
Joanna joined the University of Alberta Industry Liaison Office (a precursor to TEC Edmonton) in 1999. In her current role as Associate Director of the Technology Management team (Health Sciences), Joanna oversees the provision of intellectual property management and commercialization services to local inventors in the health sciences area. Prior to joining TEC Edmonton, Joanna spent a decade in production roles in the biomanufacturing industry, first with a private Alberta firm, and later with the Alberta Research Council. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Genetics and an MBA in Technology Commercialization, both from the University of Alberta. Joanna is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and the Licensing Executive Society (LES). She is also a case study discussion leader for the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and a grant reviewer for the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).

Natural Sciences and Engineering

Trevor Prentice
Trevor PrenticeSenior Technology Management Officer
Trevor originally spent two years working for TEC Edmonton between 2007-2009, returned in 2013 and has since been a member of TEC’s Natural Sciences and Engineering team within the Technology Management group. Trevor specializes in intellectual property strategy, assessment and management. He helps researchers and companies with the Alberta Ontario Innovation Program and other research funding opportunities, as well as with technology licensing. Previously, Trevor was a staff scientist at the TELUS World of Science Edmonton. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics (Honours) from the University of Alberta, a Masters of Aerospace Engineering, and a Certificate of Innovation and Entrepreneurship both from the University of Washington. During the summer, when he’s not helping TEC clients with their intellectual property, Trevor can be found outdoors in various parks around Edmonton where he hosts a capture the flag league.
Rebecka Carroll
Rebecka CarrollTechnology Management Officer
A member of TEC’s Technology Management team, Rebecka has been with the company since 2011. As a Technology Management Officer, Rebecka manages all stages of technology transfer, from determining intellectual property (IP) and protection strategies, coordinating patent filings for early stage technologies, assistance with grant applications, marketing and negotiation the transfer of commercialization rights to industry, spin-off formation as well as primary and secondary market research. Prior to joining TEC, Rebecka spent over 10 years in biotechnology research with several peer-reviewed publications. She received her honours degree in Molecular Genetics in 2001 and a Masters degree in business administration specializing in technology commercialization in 2013. When not at work, Rebecka enjoys camping, hiking, water sports and just about anything outdoors.
Mandira Das
Mandira DasTechnology Management Officer
Mandira joined TEC Edmonton in September 2012 as a technology transfer officer with a focus on managing and commercializing intellectual property in natural sciences and engineering. Mandira is experienced in due diligence intellectual property (IP) assessments, market assessments, marketing, negotiating and establishing contractual agreements as well as grant funding assistance for researchers. Mandira’s key areas of expertise include micro/nano electro-mechanical sensors, oil sands technologies, wireless power transfer, renewable energy and communications technologies. Mandira holds a Master of Applied Science degree in Electrical Engineering with research experience in the nanotechnology sector. She is a registered member of APEGA.
Shalon McFarlane
Shalon McFarlaneTechnology Management Officer
Shalon has been a Technology Management Officer as a member of the Natural Sciences & Engineering Technology Management team at TEC since 2013. Specializing in Intellectual Property, Shalon evaluates technologies and inventions from the University of Alberta and surrounding Edmonton region, develops commercialization strategies (spinoff vs. licensing), and conducts market research to promote technologies to potential licensees as well as drafts and negotiates various commercial agreements. Shalon’s portfolio includes all applications of technologies in Natural Sciences and Engineering, but specifically those in the space of nanotechnology; energy and the environment; materials and compounds; chemistry; and electronics and software. Before joining TEC, Shalon completed her Master of Science in Physics with a focus in Condensed Matter Physics, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Physics, both from the University of Alberta. Her research areas were in nanotechnology and photonics, with collaborations in chemistry and engineering, and a focus on nano-imaging, microscopy and spectroscopy. Shalon enjoys spending time at the gym, and is a competitive weightlifter and nationally ranked powerlifter.

Health Sciences

Megha Bajaj
Megha BajajTechnology Management Officer
Megha Bajaj has been with TEC since 2016. In her role, Megha consults University of Alberta inventors on intellectual property matters (prior art searches and assessments), manages the patenting process and assists with licensing negotiations and strategies for commercialization. Before joining TEC, Megha was a Research Scientist and Project Co-ordinator at Intas Biopharmaceuticals Ltd., India. She holds a Master’s degree in Microbiology. Megha is currently finishing her PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Alberta. She is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). In her spare time, Megha enjoys painting, hiking and snowboarding.
Veronica Coronado
Veronica CoronadoTechnology Management Officer
Veronica Coronado has been with TEC since 2011. A member of the Health Sciences team within the Technology Management group, Veronica is the main point of contact for reviewing and negotiating Confidentiality, Material Transfer, and Data Transfer Agreements for University of Alberta investigators in the health sciences. Prior to joining TEC, Veronica was a Business Development Associate at Isotechnika, Inc. for four years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Lethbridge, completed two years of Postgraduate research in Biochemistry at the University of Alberta, and received her PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of Alberta. Veronica has also studied voice and piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music and achieved her Professional Level-1 certification in ballet from the Royal Academy of Dance.
Isha Katyal
Isha KatyalTechnology Management Officer
Joining TEC in 2015, Isha brings experience both health sciences and business development. As a Technology Management Officer, she guides clients through health technology assessment, commercialization, spinoff, and startup creation. Her areas of expertise are in medical devices, healthcare related wearable technologies, regenerative medicine, lab research tools. Isha started her career as a Business Analyst in the healthcare division of Evalueserve in India before moving to Canada to pursue her PhD in Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan, and also worked there as a technology transfer analyst. Isha loves to create art using recyclable waste materials, as well as spending time with her two children.

 

Quang Tran
Quang TranTechnology Management Officer
After joining TEC in 2014, Quang has been a member of the Technology Management team where he conducts invention assessments, reviews and drafts commercialization agreements and assists with IP portfolio management. Before joining TEC, Quang spent two years with Innovate Calgary as a Technology Analyst. Quang received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta and is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers. In his spare time, Quang is an avid golfer.

Administrative

Megan Beattie
Megan BeattieAdministrative Assistant
Megan joined TEC Edmonton in 2014. In her role as an Administrative Assistant for the Technology Management team, she enters data into company databases, drafts correspondence for Technology Transfer Agreements for various academic institutions and corporations, and coordinates schedules. Before joining TEC, Megan spent ten years at a successful Sherwood Park/Edmonton roofing company providing administrative, financial, and sales support. Megan is a huge animal lover, and volunteers with her daughter at the Edmonton Humane Society giving love to all the animals.
