On September 2, Startup Canada announced the winners of the 2016 Startup Canada Awards for the Prairie Region. TEC Edmonton would like to congratulate all of this years winners, one of which is a TEC Edmonton client, and two of which are TEC Edmonton team members.


The Startup Canada Innovation Award was presented to Exciton Technologies as an entrepreneur-led business demonstrating excellence. Exciton’s proprietary technology leverages the antimicrobial properties of silver to create innovative, cost-effective and safe wound dressings to prevent bacterial growth and the spread of infections. After years of product development, Exciton achieved its first profitable year by grossing $3 million in 2015.

The winner of the Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award is Dr. Randy Yatscoff, TEC Edmonton Executive Vice President of Business Development. The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding impact and enduring legacy in Canadian entrepreneurship.

As Executive Vice President of Business Development at TEC Edmonton, Randy leads a team that works with over 80 companies per year. The team provides a multitude of services to Edmonton’s entrepreneurial community, including mentoring and coaching, market research and opportunity assessments,executive contracting, product development, regulatory compliance, branding and marketing,and corporate structure and governance. Randy’s expert mentorship and guidance, as well as strategic direction for TEC Edmonton, is backed by more than a decade of experience as a biotech executive, notably serving as President and CEO of the drug development company Isotechnika. During his tenure at Isotechnika, Randy helped raise $200 million in equity financing and took the company public.

Shaheel Hooda, TEC Edmonton Executive in Residence and President of Intellis Strategic Advisory, took home the Startup Canada Entrepreneur Promotion Award, which is awarded to individuals who advance the environment and culture of entrepreneurship in Canada. As a serial entrepreneur and angel investor, Shaheel shares his business acumen gained from over two decades of experience in the information and communications technology sector. Recently, he has taken on the role of Program Director for TEC Edmonton’s newly-formed T-Squared Accelerator, a partnership between TEC Edmonton and TELUS that delivers opportunities to Alberta’s early-stage tech companies.

TEC Edmonton congratulates all winners of the 2016 Startup Canada Awards for the Prairie Region. Together, they set an example of the Prairie Region as a strong ecosystem of entrepreneurial drive and support.
