Solar Powered Oxygen Delivery

DescriptionLicOpp 2015100

Researchers at the University of Alberta and Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, Uganda have developed a novel system to deliver oxygen in remote and resourcelimited hospitals that have minimal access to oxygen cylinders or an electric power supply. A pilot system has been tested and implemented in hospitals in Uganda for treating children under the age of 13 years with pneumonia. Results from this pilot study have shown considerable improvement in clinical practices, resulted in regular supply of oxygen and reduction in overall costs to provide oxygen in resource limited environments.

This technology overcomes the limitations of using oxygen cylinders and concentrators by eliminating the use of ill-fitting and poorly maintained tank regulators resulting in wastage of compressed oxygen, a constant need for electric power and stock management issues.

Advantages

  • Low cost system to provide a constant supply of oxygen to resource limited hospitals
  • Proof-of-concept study completed with positive results
