Patent 10,164,595: Clipped amplifier
This patent describes a clipping circuit for an amplifier. Electrical amplifier circuits typically use silicon or germanium materials for sound distortion. The clipping circuit
in this patent uses a molecular or other tunneling junction to produce soft or hard clipping, which unlocks a new spectrum of sounds. This patent is licensed to Nanolog Audio, a spin-off company founded by McCreery and Bergren for applications as a distortion circuit for electrical guitar signals and other electronic sounds.
The TEC Edmonton Innovation Awards celebrate the success of University of Alberta researchers. In 2019, awards were presented to ten University of Alberta spin-off companies and nine research teams that received a US patent and have an industry partner.
