Benefits of Technology Transfer
Sharing knowledge with society is a primary goal of the University of Alberta. Obvious ways to share knowledge are through teaching, publishing and conferences. Technology transfer is another way researchers can share knowledge, inventions or innovations with society.
Technology transfer may occur in tandem with other activities such as publishing, in order to maximize the value of the knowledge for the broader community.
Technology commercialization is sometimes the best method for sharing knowledge with society. In instances where significant costs could otherwise prevent development of inventions, such as with the creation and testing of pharmaceuticals, patent protection may secure a position that can attract the investment needed to facilitate R&D.
Commercialization also has the potential to provide significant benefits to local and regional economies (see Commercialization Performance).
The University of Alberta’s Technology Transfer Group is among Canada’s most effective organizations for university technology transfer.
Top 5 Reasons for Technology Transfer
- Commercialization disseminates the results of new research to society.
- The availability of Technology Transfer assistance and the potential revenues from commercialization helps recruit, retain and reward faculty.
- Technology Transfer stimulates closer partnerships between the University and industry.
- Commercialization directly generates jobs, income and economic growth for the region, which provides opportunities to the students of the University and their families.
- Research commercialization helps diversify the economy through direct contributions to knowledge-based advanced-technology industries.
