Report of Invention (ROI)

If you are a University of Alberta researcher who invents or discovers a process, device, compound, technology, software, etc., and you intend to commercialize these research results, you are required by the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement to disclose the invention to the University (see link below to the U of A Patent Policy).

TEC Edmonton records all invention disclosures for the University. Early disclosure is strongly encouraged in order to address intellectual property concerns.

You will be asked to complete a standard Report of Invention (ROI) questionnaire (also called an invention disclosure form at some institutions) or, in some cases, a Report of Copyright Commercialization form.

U of A Inventors: Download the appropriate form from the link at the bottom of this page.

  • The Report of Copyright Commercialization should be used to disclose any original work including software and digital media suitable for commercial licensing.
  • The Report of Invention (ROI) form is used for all other inventions and may lead to IP protection through patents. Patentable algorithms or computer programs must be disclosed using a Report of Invention.

You are encouraged to consult with a member of TEC Edmonton's Technology Transfer team to assist you in completing this form.  Consultation is readily available to answer your queries, even before you have determined if you are going to assign the technology or pursue independent development. This consultation helps researchers evaluate the potential for development and the steps taken with the different routes to commercialization. Please Contact Us for assistance.

Remember, as the inventor, you have the right to commercialize your invention on your own, or you can assign it to the University and have our office assume risk and responsibility for commercialization, if, after evaluation, it is accepted.

(Note: If the invention arose through a research contract, then the assignment to the University is mandatory and the University will discuss licensing the invention to the industry sponsor.)

After you complete the Report of Invention, and if you assign the invention to the University, the Technology Transfer Program will evaluate the invention in terms of its patentability and market potential.  We use many internal and external resources for the evaluation.  Visit the Technology Transfer Program for details on our services.
