The University of Alberta requires student researchers who invent a device, process, composition, technology, and/or who write software and intend on commercializing it to disclose the invention. All reports of inventions and report of copyright , are recorded by TEC Edmonton on behalf of the University of Alberta

As a student, you own the IP rights to your discoveries and are not obliged to commercialize, however, early disclosure of your technology is strongly advised if you want to protect your IP (i.e. before any public announcement is made).
